How a dream became a reality...
In 2007 Neil Richardson & Anita Walker, both leading local Musical Theatre performers realised they had a shared ambition to independently stage less well known and rarely performed work. Having both worked on stage with many very talented local performers and with a wealth of creative artistic & musical experience behind them their aim was to bring together a mix of performers to create productions which were fresh, challenging & exciting for audiences and cast members alike.
Their dream quickly became a reality & after a successful concert raising money for Irchester Church in the autumn of 2007, Theatreworkz was born & Just So, a rarely performed but well scripted and scored family musical was chosen as their inaugural production, a Regional premiere in Oct 2008, which was performed to great acclaim from the audiences.
Radio Times, their second major theatrical production, another regional premiere, was performed at the Masque Theatre, Barton Seagrave in March 2009. Radio Times won Best Musical Theatre Production in its NODA region for 2009.
Another Regional Premiere followed in February 2010.
Bad Girls The Musical (based on
the hit ITV series) was performed by a fantastic cast of 25 girls, and a handful of guys and another amazing band to great critical acclaim. Bad Girls was nominated for a Noda Award for best musical in the district
Yet another, a contemporary musical song-cycle by Jason Robert Brown "Songs for a New World" featuring only 4 vocalists and a 4 piece band was brilliantly staged in June 2010 at The Star Hall, Finedon.
In December 2010 we completed a 5 performance run and another Regional Premiere of the Madness inspired musical "Our House". Featuring a cast of 23 and a fantastic band of 7 the Masque Theatre, Barton Seagrave echoed to the sound of all the great Madness classics of the 80's - My Girl, Our House, Wings of a Dove, One Better Day, I've been driving in my car, It Must be Love to name a few (production photo's have been added to the gallery)
This production won the Noda Award for Best Musical pipping our own production of Bad Girls into second place.
Our next show was the long awaited production of La Cage Aux Folles in April 2011 at The Masque which played to enthusiastic audiences and garnered a great deal of critical acclaim as well as being nominated for the Best Musical again by NODA.
Neville's Island was our first Play performed at The Castle Studio in Wellingborough. A Great comedy by the writer of Our House, Tim Firth Neville's Island played for 4 nights to an appreciative audience who took an unusual interest in a sausage!
This was followed by From Page to Stage in December when we returned to Finedon's Star Hall to produce an evening of Musical Theatre from some of theatre's best composers. Full of close harmony work the show was enjoyed by an enthusiastic audience and is now available for performance by Theatreworkz as part of our Cabaret repetoire. You can book the group to perform this 2 hour production for your fund raising event or celebration.
In May 2012 we staged the critically acclaimed production of Jason Robert Brown's Parade at a new home, The Pembeton Centre in Rushden. Many described the production as the best amateur show they have seen and the vocal quality was described by many to be outstanding.
September 2012 came Calendar Girls at The Pemberton Centre, the story of a group of WI members who embark on an alternative Calendar Shoot to help raise funds for a sofa for the local hospital in memory of one of the members husbands - John, who tragically died of Leukaemia. The production was a resounding success, during which we raised £400 selling cakes and then launched our own Calendar for 2013 which to date has aslo raised £400 to benefit Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research. Due to its outstanding success we are staging the production at The Castle Studio in June 2013 with many of our original cast - Be sure to book early for this one.
The Autumn/Winter season 2012 gave us the opportunity to showcase our Cabaret Talents by staging a series of Cabaret performances at Great Doddington Memorial Hall (which will be repeated in 2013) - Including Movie Memories, A Spoonful of Theatreworkz (which will be given a staged premiere at The Castle Studio in July 2013) and Theatreworkz Christmaz Crackerz.
Together with Kevin Sheen, Neil Richardson backed by a 3 piece band (Anita Walker & Kate Oram on keys & Brendan Rayner on drums) performed a two night run of 'Portrait of Love' at The Castle Studio in February. The event received some amazing critical comments and has resulted in further bookings for the show later in the year.
In the summer we jointly produced with FYSH2FRY the first in our MISCAST series at Bedford's The Place raising money for Dreamflight & Leukaemia Research (£500)
This was followed up in July with a fully staged contemporary concert A Spoonful Of Theatreworkz which will also be given another airing in 2014 with Another Spoonful of Theareworkz.
In November 2013 we staged the hilarious Musical Play by Peter Nichols & Denis King "Privates on Parade" to rave reviews (if not a few raised eyebrows and blushes on the front row). This production has already raised £400 for Help for Heroes and we are hoping to get to the £1000 mark with the sale of our 2015 Theatreworkz Calendar featuring photographs from the many of our award winning productions. We followed up our 2013 production of Spoonful with "Another Spoonful of Theatreworkz" again at The Castle Studio in Wellingborough with a hugely successful 4 night run in June 2014,when we previewed our Autumn production as well as re-visiting the parody "Forbidden Theatreworkz" to the amusement of our audiences. In October 2014 we made our return to The Masque Theatre in Barton Seagrave for another Theatreworkz premiere production, in fact The National Amateur Premiere of Imagine This to resounding critical acclaim from both our local audiences, schools and from industry professionals. We were delighted with the reviews and comments received. In May 2015 we made our debut at The Castle Theatre with another area premiere & a Theatreworkz record breaking run of Hairspray.
We had a fantastic 5 performance run and the production was critically acclaimed with very few free seats throughout the run.
We would like to thank the many cast members, band members, technical and front of house volunteers who have helped us over the last few years.
